Singer/songwriter, Tina Dico has spent more than two decades proving that intimacy and scale are not opposites. Her voice, often described as heavenly, carries a poignant, unflinching honesty that has made her one of Denmark's brightest stars, and one whose reach extends well beyond her home country's borders.
Born in Aarhus, Denmark, Dico grew up in a house full of music thanks to a hi-fi obsessed father who bought records for their sound quality rather than genre or artistic merit. The approach exposed her to an unusually wide range of styles as a child, and while she gravitated most strongly toward Leonard Cohen, Donovan, and Joni Mitchell, she had absorbed a healthy dose of opera and traditional Danish repertoire by the time she had worked through his collection. An old reel to reel tape machine and a microphone her father built captured her earliest teenage songwriting attempts, though Dico did not take any of it seriously until she joined a band at fifteen. That renewed interest eventually led her to the Danish Royal College of Music, where she formed another band and entered her songs in talent competitions, one of which was broadcast on Danish television. The appearance drew calls from record labels, but the strings attached to their offers pushed Dico toward releasing her debut on her own terms instead.
That instinct paid off. Her 2003 EP, 'Notes,' spread quickly by word of mouth and earned her a Danish Grammy for Best Songwriter, an especially notable feat given how little radio support it received. Around the same period, Dico moved to England, where she connected with ambient electronica act Zero 7, contributing to their acclaimed album 'When It Falls' and joining the band on tour, including a stop at Glastonbury. She followed with the EP 'Far,' fleshing out the mostly acoustic material from 'Notes' with a full band, before releasing her first full length album, 'In The Red,' in early 2006. It went to number one in Denmark, the first of five chart topping albums in her catalogue, a run that includes 'Count To Ten,' the three-part collection ‘Triology,’ 'Welcome Back Colour,' and 'Fastland.' One of those releases was tracked at Jimi Hendrix's famed Electric Lady Studios, fulfilling a lifelong dream for an artist who counted the guitarist among her earliest influences.
Dico's stature in Denmark has grown into something closer to institutional. She was invited to perform for the Danish Crown Prince's fiftieth birthday celebration, played major festivals including Roskilde, and sold out a 15,000-capacity show at Copenhagen's Royal Arena in April 2026. Her songwriting draws just as easily on Scottish and Irish folk traditions as it does on the Scandinavian songcraft she grew up with, and she has spoken openly about how differently Danish and English function inside her writing, with Danish words carrying more weight and imagery, and English allowing melody and emotion to move more freely through a song as a whole.
Dico now lives in Iceland with her husband and musical partner, Helgi Jónsson, with whom she co-produces her records at their home studio, Big Spring Studio. Motherhood has shifted how she approaches both songwriting and touring, and she has described stepping onstage now as a whole person rather than, in her words, an artist whisking through town. That shift runs through her new single "Surfing," a meditation on how deeply our moods, choices, and actions ripple outward into the lives of the people around us.
